the Saint Lucia Summer Festival – will be launched in May when the season of festivals, as it is being dubbed, opens with Saint Lucia Jazz.

The four-day event that will feature quality Saint Lucian, Caribbean, and international jazz artists, beginning on May 11th and culminating at a Mother’s Day concert on May 14th, at the iconic Pigeon Island National Landmark.

This year’s festival lineup blends island culture, famed musical talent, and eclectic music genres. Internationally renowned performers taking center stage this year include the Grammy-nominated singer and actress Vanessa Williams and the multi-talented Rachelle Ferrell. Saint Lucian and Caribbean jazz and related genres of music will also feature prominently, with the Rupert Lay Quartet, Michael Robinson, Ronald Boo Hinkson and Friends, David Rudder and the Caribbean band Bluemangó, led by Saint Lucian Richard Payne, and joined on stage by Haitian trumpetist Jean Caze and Guadeloupean vocalist Malika Tirolien.

Additional headliners include pianist, composer and social activist Danilo Pérez; Grammy-winning drummer, composer and bandleader Terri Lyne Carrington; and Kenny Garrett, a Grammy award-winning jazz saxophonist and flautist who was a member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra and the Miles Davis’ band.

Tickets for the Saint Lucia Jazz Festival cost US$37/EC$100 for the Thursday and Friday night shows, and US$65/EC$175 for the Saturday and Sunday shows. Tickets can be purchased online at www.soleilsaintlucia.com.

SOLEIL – the season of festivals 2017 – comprises six cultural and artistic events, from May to October including Roots & Soul; Saint Lucia Carnival; Food & Rum; Country & Blues and Arts & Heritage.

Strong Fringe Events For Jazz

FRINGE events will feature prominently in Saint Lucia Jazz 2017 under the Soleil Saint Lucia Summer Festival banner. As in previous years, fringe events have traditionally been an integral part of Saint Lucia Jazz and this year is no exception.
West Coast Jazz will kick off the fringe events for Jazz 2017. It will be held at Quantum Gardens in Massacre, Anse La Raye, tomorrow from 2:00 p.m. The line-up includes DYP, Extent, Rob ‘Zi’ Taylor and Phyness, the Charles Cadet Orchestra, Carl Gustave, and Antonius Henry. Admission to this event is $20 with children under 12 being admitted free of charge.
From Wednesday, May 10 – Friday, May 12 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily, the Blue Coral Mall in downtown Castries will stage Blue Coral Jazz. The line-up includes Dynamix Band, Saint Lucia School of Music, Stacy Charles and Friends, Yannick James, Aimran Simmons, 6 Miles, and Epic Band. Patrons will be offered special discounts and packages from select stores at Blue Coral Mall.
On Thursday, May 11 from 1:00 p.m. will see the staging of the traditional Tea Time Jazz at La Place Carenage. Performing live will be Rob “Zi” Taylor, Skip Monday, Dynamix Band, and Claudia Edward with her band Naked Chords.
The major events for Saint Lucia Jazz 2017 also sound-off on Thursday, May 11 at 7:00 p.m. with The Jazz Showcase at the Royalton Saint Lucia Resort & Spa with Ronald ‘Boo’ Hinkson and the Young Stars featuring Kyvon Edwin, Shanne James, Shannon Pinel, Rashaad Joseph, Irvin ‘Ace’ Loctar and Vladimir Lucien. On show will be the best of Saint Lucia’s musical and literary talent under the guidance of local music icon Ronald ‘Boo’ Hinkson.
Rodney Bay will come alive with Jazz on the Strip. The popular Keebees Bar and Q-Lounge will stage live performances featuring local musicians.
Public Relations Officer for the Events Company of St. Lucia Inc., Mineva Ross, is encouraged by the number of fringe events being organized this year, noting: “The fringe events foster community participation in the festival and this is something we at Events St. Lucia encourage. We want to continue to infuse that level of ownership, community involvement and buy-in to Saint Lucia Jazz and all the other events which we will be staging as part of the Soleil Saint Lucia Summer Festival.”
